The DesignTalks series introduces Fabio Parasecoli’s research on the representation of food in films as a social and political battleground.
Onstage. Within the setting of That’sdesign! at Zona Tortona, premiere venue for spotting young and upcoming talents gathering in Milan for the Design Week, Scuola Politecnica di Design showcases two concepts freshly developed for Serralunga by Industrial Design Master’s students.
Pablo Crespo (Spain, 26), Martin Franzen (Sweden, 26) and Isaac Pineiro (Spain, 31) investigate in the function of furniture design. Mr. Hydeand Terranova, the two concepts produced by rotomoulding, claim a role exceeding the dimension of the mere object in order to tell a different story. Mr Hyde tricks your eye updating classical values that evoke memories while Terranova creates a own landscape floating between interior and exterior, public and private, to fit contemporary lifestyles better.
Surprise. Mr. Hyde lights up unveiling icons of the past out of the essential and controlled surfaces of the sofa. The comparison with milestones and masters of the history of design is reinvented thanks to a smarter use of light, materials, patterns and to a playful approach, connecting past and future. The collection of Terranova seatings – sofas and easy chairs – features timeless design icons but also classics as the Chesterfields. Mr Hyde is perfectly at ease in contemporary environments as well as in more conventional spaces. It has an optimistic vision of technologies, it is not afraid of changes and mutates from the day to the night when its skin is illuminated by the most celebrated designs.
Terranova speaks a softer everyday language. Its inspiration is in the contrast between interior and exterior, warmth and coldness. Everyday we explore unfamiliar or far away places, searching for feelings that carry us home. Terranova adds emotion into these fragments of nomadic life and helps building a sense of belonging to a community, no matter where you are. It‘s a flexible landscape made of furniture pieces in constant dialogue as friendly, almost human presences: stools, occasional tables, room dividers which articulate spaces without actually separating them. The project brings home the laidback feeling of outdoor furniture while giving outdoor places or else public spaces a sophisticated, domestic quality together with a stronger orientation towards the needs of the individuals. Terranova combines classical materials such as wood and marble with the process of rotomoulding. From the formal point of view, the design chooses organic forms, well balanced proportions together with a peculiar relaxed and welcoming attitude.
Matteo Bazzicalupo and Raffaella Mangiarotti from DeepDesignsupervised the overall project that involved more than thirty students. “It was a real challenge to us as outdoor furniture is interested by increasing demands for physical and emotional comfort which, traditionally, are typical of residential interiors. The close collaboration between Scuola Politecnica di Design and Serralunga and the strong technical expertise of the company, added a significant value to the developement of flexible design solutions that match the current relation between indoor and outdoor spaces”.
SPD is also taking part into the BestUp event at the milanese “Fabbrica del Vapore”, via Procaccini 4 with a project that figures out new coworking solutions for a sustainable dwelling in collaboration with Mariano Pichlerfrom Brainport. The project focuses on the Lambretto area, a former industrial site on the outskirts of the city where the famous Lambretta scooters were produced. SPD Master’s project was developed by students inInterior Design under the guidance of Guendalina di Lorenzo and Ondine de la Feld. Ideas and solution for living and working better in a reconverted, ecofriendly center for contemporary arts will be on show during the DesignWeek. A chance to meet the students and learn more about the project will be offered with the “sustainable cocktail” Saturday, April 19th at 11.
