SPD Scuola Politecnica di Design joined forces with Frank Stephenson Design for the ambitious project Opulence in the Skies. This collaboration invited One-Year Car Design students to envision the future of private aircraft interiors, set for release in 2035. The challenge was to design more than just a luxurious space, an experience that combined cutting-edge innovation, exclusivity, and sophistication, perfectly suited for the elite.
The Project Brief
The project’s core objective was to create an interior that would elevate the flying experience, blending functionality with indulgence. The students had to design distinct areas within the aircraft, such as lounges, dining spaces, and sleeping quarters, ensuring that each space was interconnected while maintaining a cohesive theme. Privacy was key, with spaces adaptable for different activities, from relaxation to work. The aircraft’s outer dimensions were provided, but it was up to the students to push boundaries and think beyond current design limitations.
The Design Process
The journey began with in-depth research and the creation of moodboards to define an overall aesthetic direction. Students presented 2D concept sketches based on the chosen moodboard, refining their ideas with advanced digital rendering. The process then moved into 3D modeling, where students worked on different sections of the interior, integrating color schemes and material options to add depth and realism to their designs. Their final presentations were a culmination of hard work, creativity, and technical skills, highlighting their unique visions for a luxurious future.

Throughout the project, students received valuable guidance from Euan McPherson, Sajay Shinu, and David Taboas from Frank Stephenson Design.
