The work of Cristina Chiappini, graphic and new media designer, took centre stage durig the latest SPDtalks! lecture on Tuesday, March 13th. The meeting, open to the public, was introduced by Silvia Sfligiotti, teacher at SPD and SPDtalks! lecture series curator for graphics and digital design area.
? Born in Rome, Cristina Chiappini is living between Rome and Venice. She is currently vice-president of Aiap, the association which gathers graphic and communication designers.
Cristina Chiappini works in publishing, corporate and web communication. Her interest in interactive and multimedia projects embraces artistic research as motion graphics and interface design. Both in experimental designs and in corporate graphics, Chiappini brings a personal interpretation, often raising questions and highlighting crucial issues. A commercial attitude towards graphics and communication is often left on the background or else is combined with her different personal interests, contemporary art in particular.
This peculiar approach appears clearly in the projects presented at SPD and namely in her experimental research on graphic representation of gender and sexual identity. With this work focused on the theme of female genital mutilations, Chiappini mette in relazione tipografia e anatomia umana for a final result that is surprising for visual impact and cleanliness simultaneusly. This research, first presented in Seattle during an international conference promoted by Aiga, was also selected for the book edited by Giorgio Camuffo under the title Red Wine and Green, a collective work gathering projects by emerging Italian designers.
Since 1996 Cristina Chiappini has also been experimenting with the potential of digital media. She explores the languages below the limit of perception developing the concept of loop. Her research work is also collected in her website www.cristinachiappini.com. Her interest in interactive and multimedia projects embraces artistic research as motion graphics and interface design. La ricerca formale prende spunto dalla tecnologia ma attinge copiosamente da altri territori e in particolare dall’arte contemporanea, punto di riferimento centrale nel lavoro di Chiappini.
The integration of different media, between design and technologies, research and professional practice will take center stage during the meetings held at SPD in Milan, via Ventura 15, until May 2007.Among the invited guests not to be missed in the visual communication area, also the Dutch collectiveLust on May 17th and the eclectic designer Martì Guixé.
