May 07: architecture, design and communication with the new SPDtalks! lectures.

Aldo Cibic and Dimitri Nieuwenhuizen from the Dutch graphic design firmLust: a double appointment with SPDtalks! after the suspension in April on the occasion of the Milano Design Week.

On Thursday May, 10th at 6,30 p.m. it is Cibic’s turn, SPD alumnus during the 80ies when he also joined the Memphis group along with Sottsass and De Lucchi since its very beginning. Today Cibic is leading Cibic and Partners, one of the most well known architecture and design studios in Italy with many works all over the world. “Every project is a challenge to create a feeling, even a simple one, that consequently generates identity, vitality and a sense of belonging”. This approach developed at Cibic and Partners’ is perfectly illustrated by their Microrealities project: a research work developed for the 9th Venice Architecture Biennial with the participation of SPD students from the MID Master’s in Interior Design. Four projects about places and people between Milan and Shanghai, ranging from shopping malls to urban green areas for recreation, from subway stations to the city gates, based on the idea that people’s actions can determine the identity of a space. As a result of this seminal research Aldo Cibic is going to present during the lecture at SPD, a book and various professional works developed by the studio all over the world.

On Thursday May, 17th at 6 p.m. SPDtalks! brings back the attention on graphic design. Dimitri Nieuwenhuizen from the Dutch graphic design studio Lust will be introduced by Silvia Sfligiotti, teacher and SPDtalks! curator for the communication and visual arts area. Lust is especially interested in exploring new angles and attitudes towards graphic design and software. According to the Lust philosophy, design is the product of ananalytic process based on extensive research which eventually causes the final result to develop autonomously. Lust employs a range of media, like for example graphic design, interactive installations, exhibitions and architectural graphics. Among their most interesting projects: the identity system for the festival and the Digital Depot of the Boijmans van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam. Lust recently celebrated their tenth anniversary with an exhibition/installation at the TAG Gallery in The Hague and with a series of meetings and seminare focusing on Info Aesthetics.

The final SPDtalks! lecture will be on Thursday May, 31st at 6 p.m. withMartí Guixé, Spanish design superstar and the creative mind behind the global success of power brands like Camper.
