After exploring cutting-edge experiences in advertising communication with Erik Kessels, creative director of the Dutch agency KesselsKramer, SPD turns attention back to graphic design and typography in particular. Thursday, June 5th at 18.30, DesignTalks will meet Dimitri Bruni from Norm, the Zurich-based graphic design team cofounded with Manuel Krebs. The conference is open to the general public; Dimitri Bruni will be introduced by Sivia Sfligiotti, SPD. Norm redefines the legacy of mid-20th century Swiss graphic tradition through an imaginative but intellectually rigorous approach joint with a playful use of technology. For instance, Sign Generator, the machine developed with Jurg Lehni, allows creating new alphabets made from a set of lines combined by the user. Among the firm’s projects, their self-published books, Norm: introduction andNorm: the Things, the typography for Cologne Airport and for Omega, the watch manufacturer. In 2005 Norm won the first prize in the competition for the new design of the complete series of Swiss banknotes.
DesignTalks is the series of lectures promoted every year by SPD to explore the most interesting research trends in contemporary design ranging from graphics and multimedia to product design and architecture. The integration of different media, between design and technologies, research and professional practice will take center stage during the meetings. After Etienne Mineur, Theredbox, Studio Najbrt, Erik Kessels from Kessels Kramer, the lecture by Norm will conclude the programme dedicated to visual communication and multimedia. From the end of June and throughout July DesignTalks will be focused on the design of products, spaces and experiences. The four DesignTalks on schedule are: Ross Lovegrove, Fernando and Humberto Campana, Matali Crasset and Martì Guixé. Guests will be introduced by Cristina Morozzi curator of the second part of the DesignTalks series.
