Matteo Arietti

Lecturer - Design and Architecture

Matteo Arietti is an architect and Module Leader in the Architecture and Design programme at SPD, where he teaches in the second year of the Bachelor. His work crosses architecture, design and special projects, merging together creative and strategic direction. His research starts from the way spaces and objects change meaning over time. He looks at reuse and at meanwhile conditions, when a building lives a provisional life between one function and the next, and at sound as a material of architecture. The same attention extends to studios themselves: how they organise their work, and how culture can give them a recognisable position. Artificial intelligence runs through all of this. He uses it every day in design and research, and studies what happens to the designer’s work when a machine takes part in it. Which decisions can be shared with an algorithm, and where judgement and authorship remain, are the questions that shape both his teaching and his work with studios. He treats the exchange between person and machine as a design problem in its own right, with its own materials, its own rules and its own aesthetics. arikiri is his practice of artistic and design research. It places objects, sound, space and visual culture in relation to one another, and treats each piece of work as an argued position. Under the same name he also performs as a DJ.
