Born in the Netherlands Huub studied design at the Rietveld Academy of Art in Amsterdam. A former head of design at Artemide and Danese Milano, he founded his design studio in Milan, Italy in 2005 and since 2011 he is based in Montpellier, in southern France. Huub approaches design with an anthropological and transculturational perspective, always searching to bridge the ancient with the contemporary. In his view, the main role of the designer is about constantly sharpening our perceptions. As he sees it, an object should be somewhat imperfect in order to leave room for each user’s personal interpretation, inviting to discover constantly « more » in the artefact, and thus enable the development of an intimate and lasting relationship with the object. Since 2005, Studio Huub Ubbens has been designing objects, mainly lamps and furniture, for clients such as Panasonic, Castorama, Artemide, Focus-creation, Colosio- Arditi, BBB Italia, Objekto, 3M, B.fabers, Gypsum and Danese-Milano. The design studio also provide services of lighting design for architecture, art and theater. Huub transmits his professional experience both as a public speaker as well as a design teacher on universities and design schools in countries such as Italy, China, France and Brazil.
