The DesignTalks series introduces Fabio Parasecoli’s research on the representation of food in films as a social and political battleground.
Stefano Giovannoni will be giving a lecture at SPD on Wednesday March 21st at 6 p.m.. This meeting with Giovannoni – with an introduction by Alberto Bassi, teacher at Scuola Politecnica di Design – will be open to the public as all the SPDtalks! appointments on schedule promoted by the school to investigate the most interesting research trends in contemporary graphics, product and car design, architecture.
Stefano Giovannoni is a leading figure in Italian design. He works as industrial, interior designer and architect. His firm, GiovannoniDesign, collaborates with primary companies: Alessi, Magis, Flos, Bisazza, Fiat, Siemens and Oregon Scientific among the others. With his designs he gained international recognition in important competitions such as the Design Plus and the Compasso d’Oro awards. His contemporary design icons have been selected for the permanent collections of important institutions all over the world such as Centre Georges Pompidou and MOMA.
His long lasting collaboration with some of the most representative companies of Italian design such as Alessi and Magis radically changed the domestic landscape of the last decades: our homes but also offices and recreational environments have been invaded by a plethora of objects that, in the words of Alberto Alessi are true and proper champions of a “super” & “popular”design. In other words, projects that are capable to achieve two different goals, usually quite tricky to combine: «knowing not only how to reach the highest possible quality of a project (and this has to do with creating culture), but also being understood by the largest amount of people possible (and this has to do with being able to communicate with the public). In other words, real Super & Popular products are small miracles of creativity and most of all, are not often happening in design history. They express a concentrated form of poetry that brings a spark of joy to many people. By definition they do not need to conform to any preconceived dogma an are free from any prejudice».
The meeting with Giovannoni will investigate all the key values in his design universe: his virtuosistic use of emotional codes and of the metaphor, his ability in opening new roads to solve the perpetual dilemma of the relation between form and function, his natural ability to tell stories that fascinate any audience. The same audience that is rewarding him with an extraordinary commercial success that made the fortune and international popularity of most of Italian brands such as Magis.
After Stefano Giovannoni, SPDtalks! will focus again on research in automotive design: Nevio di Giusto, CEO of both the Research Centre FIAT and Elasis consortium, will be the invited lecturer in the next meeting at SPD on April 3rd at 5 p.m.
