The DesignTalks series introduces Fabio Parasecoli’s research on the representation of food in films as a social and political battleground.
The third lecture in the Design Talk 2012 series will be held by Rafael Koch and Urs Hofer, a designer and a programmer, both from Switzerland, who have developed the online content manager Rokfor together with journalist Gina Bucher. Rokfor is a system that automatizes the production of a publication. Its focus is on generating books and various printed matter. Heterogenous and large data collections are among the most interesting playgrounds for a Rokfor production, consisting of texts, images or both. This material is analyzed in reference to implicit or explicit structures and relations.
Rokfor considers generative design as an alternative approach with its own aesthetics and beauty. This automatized content manager and editing system does not render the role of the designer obsolete, but redefines the workflow by moving the design stage at the beginning. This way, design is more about the definition of rules than the management of repetitive tasks. This is neither the form following the content nor vice versa, but a veritable collaborative effort where programming, editing and designing are unified and mutually interactive tasks. In 2011 Rokfor received the Swiss Federal Design Award for graphic design. The lecture is free and open and will be introduced by Silvia Sfligiotti.
Rafael Koch has been working as a graphic designer for numerous clients and employers in the field of book, corporate- and webdesign. Beside his professional activities he is regularly co-initiating projects in the field of application- and typedesign and frequently collaborates with fellow designers and artisits. Since 2001 Rafael Koch is also lecturing at «School of Art Lucerne» and Berne University of the Arts and has lectured or given workshops in Austria, France, Germany, Italy and Switzerland.
Urs Hofer lives and works in Berlin and Zurich as a freelance programmer. His works are mostly collaborations with graphic designers or artists, focusing on combining computer technologies with other arts, design or literature. The generated books «Ich/Buchstabendrescher» and «Encyclopaedizer» were both awarded as «Most Beautiful Swiss Books» by the Swiss federal department for culture.
