Today the students of the One Year Course in Car Design Tools spent the day in Turin together with their tutor Lorenzo Ardizio, professor of Car Design History and Culture at SPD. The first stop was in Moncalieri to visit the Italdesign headquarters. The company founded by Giorgetto Giugiaro has grown into one of the most important and successful car design firms at international level. In almost 50 years of activity Italdesign has created more than 200 vehicle models for all the most reputed automotive manufacturers worldwide from Europe, Asia and the US. In recent years the Italian company has become part of the Volkswagen group, more than 800 people are working on the different brands of the German company. The students were welcomed by Antonio Rosti that gave an overview of Italdesign history and structures. Arrigo Gallizio guided the students through a very interesting walk in the museum that displays the most successful models designed by Giugiaro.
The tour continued with a visit to the Museo Nazionale dell’Automobile under the expert guidance of Prof. Ardizio that is also a consultant to the museum. The collection focusses mainly on Italian cars and traces the development of transportation design from steam in the 1850’s, to the invention of the automobile in the 1880’s, to the present times. The museum features also a very interesting educational section with documents and interviews to the most influential car designer in the world discussing their personal design successes and failures, mentors and express their personal views on the profession.
