The 2014 programme of DesignTalks will start with the lecture of Luciano Perondi, research professor, type and information designer, director…
SPD participates in the 2014 Milan design week and presents a new family of products by its Master’s students, witnessing to the ongoing, constructive relationship of the school with leading companies in various fields. The Collapse collection is a bathroom ensemble designed byGustavo Branco Nosralla (Brazil), Dario Costa (Italy) and Burak Kocak(Turkey) as a result of an academic work in collaboration with Rapsel, internationally renowned manufacturer of design bathroom products.
The project was started in spring 2013 under the guidance of Marco Merendi, designer, architect and teacher at SPD, with the support of Aldo Provini, president of Rapsel. The final result, on display at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile (Rho fairground, pavillion 22, D27-E20), has a neat but not minimalistic presence. Basic volumes are juxtaposed to suggest a movement, a shift to an unexpected position, and create a strong architectural statement. This approach succeeds in a twofold objective: it breaks the rigidity of the composition and underlines functional details – such as handles or lights – that thus integrate in the broken geometry of each design. The sense of movement is emphasized by water flowing on the almost vertical surface of the washbasin that gives to the collection its peculiar character.
On display inside the company’s stand at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile there is the complete family of products. The Collapse collection comprises two important pieces sizewise – washbasin and bathtub – with sanitary ware, furniture and accessories such as a mirror and wall mounted cabinet and containers. The version selected for the debut combines the purity of Corian with the warm opulence of Canaletto walnut veneer, at ease both in the international contract markets and in residential interiors.
Among seven final proposals of almost twenty students of the Master in Industrial Design, Collapse is the first project chosen by the company for further development. The chance to join such a catalogue beside names such as Starck, Souto de Moura, Kuramata just to mention a few, represents a great impulse to the young designers of the school that thus confirms its vocation as a bridge to the creative professions.
