The 2014 programme of DesignTalks will start with the lecture of Luciano Perondi, research professor, type and information designer, director…
Borrowing the quote “Design is one” from Massimo Vignelli, Giovanni Anceschi, designer, artist and critic, will give an overview of the philosophy and practice of Basic Design at SPD on Wednesday 14th November from 18.30. Anceschi will focus on the relevance of this conceptual approach in education, beyond the tendency to set boundaries and categorize design into different domains.
The lecture (in Italian with simultaneous translation in English) will begin with an introduction by Silvia Sfligiotti, coeditor of Progetto Grafico magazine, faculty member at SPD and curator of the Design Talk series.
What is referred to as Basic Design is a foundational discipline identifying the set of skills and abilities supporting the inner core of design practice. In this very sense, the application of basic design principles encompasses the domains of both communication and product design. Basic design is not design in its professional orientation which is rather the thorough result of a complete design curriculum made of a variety of subjects and techniques. Basic Design instead is the discipline of configuration and namely the ability to assign a form to communicative artifacts, physical interfaces or interactive messages. And this compentence is exactly what a designer is mostly valued for and what helps making the difference in a world of engineers and technicians.
Giovanni Anceschi was one of the leading figures in the international artistic movement named Arte Cinetica e Programmata during the Sixties. Since the early 80’s he has been also active as a communication designer, design historian and theorist, curator of Visual and Multimodal Design and of Design Research both in Italy and abroad.
Past-professor of Communication Design, Infodesign and Basic Design, and past-coordinator of the PhD in Design Science at the University IUAV of Venice.
DesignTalks is the international lecture programme promoted by Scuola Politecnica di Design SPD to explore the most interesting research trends in design, architecture, graphic and multimedia. The integration of different media, between design and technologies, research and professional practice have been central to the meetings organized from March. Key speakers for the 2012 series: Luciano Bove, Francesco Cavalli, Lorenzo Damiani, Urs Hofer, Rafael Koch, Patrick Lecharpy, Luciano Perondi, Huda Smitshiiuzen AbiFarès, Paolo Tassinari.
